Back to Life are a Resuscitation Council UK approved course centre for the Generic Instructor Course (GIC).

This course is only for candidates who have been awarded IP status after attending an ALS Course.  NLS IP Candidates should instead visit our GIC for NLS candidates course information page.

The course consists of a day of e-learning followed by two days of face-to-face training delivered by qualified, experienced and dedicated instructors, and adheres to the guidelines and course contents set by the Resuscitation Council UK and the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG).

The GIC teaches the knowledge and skills required to:

  • Understand the nature of teaching and learning
  • Understand the needs of individual learners
  • Understand the awareness of the four domains of learning
  • Undertake the various types of teaching sessions on the provider courses
  • The GIC must be taken within four years of the date of the provider course

The skills taught on the GIC enable successful candidates to teach fellow healthcare professionals on a variety of other Resuscitation Council courses, including ALS, EPALS and NLS.

The GIC Process

The GIC is not open to applications in the same way other Resuscitation Council UK courses are.

Instead, future Instructors are found when they participate on other RCUK courses as a candidate and are identified by the Course Director and/or Faculty as having the potential to make an excellent Instructor, and subsequently recommended as Instructor potential (IP). Successful IP Candidates then receive an email inviting them to book a place on a GIC course.

After we receive your booking we will contact you to confirm your IP status and ensure you meet the necessary criteria to attend the GIC.  If you would like to check your eligibility before booking please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Pre course preparation

Upon successful enrolment on our course, we will provide you with a login to access the GIC Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). You are required to complete the GIC e-learning modules before joining us for your two-day face-to-face training.

We will also provide teaching assignments which you will need to prepare ahead of the face-to-face element of the course.

Programme

Across the two day face-to-face sessions, you will attend a lecture before taking part in practical sessions that cover the teaching modalities required to teach the provider courses. Topics include:

  • Approaches to teaching skills acquisition
  • Facilitating simulation
  • Undertaking assessments
  • Providing feedback to candidates

After successful completion of the GIC, you must teach on two provider courses as an Instructor Candidate (IC) within two years of the GIC in order to complete your training and receive your instructor status and certificate, issued by the Resuscitation Council UK.

Download the full programme by following the link in the "Useful Resources" box on this web page.

Assessment and certification

Continuous assessment occurs throughout the GIC, and Candidates receive constructive feedback during the course from our faculty.

A full Instructor certificate is awarded after successful completion of a GIC and after teaching on two provider courses as an Instructor Candidate. Certified Instructors will also receive complementary Associate Membership with the Resuscitation Council UK, which provides a variety of benefits.

This course is recognised as continuing professional development (CPD) by the Medical, Dental and Nursing Royal Colleges and Health Care Professional Council.
